In 1938, the eighteenth century building, which had felt the footsteps of Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, the Marquis de Lafayette & many others—famous, infamous & should be famous—was scheduled for demolition. The citizens of Elizabeth formed a committee to raise the money to purchase and restore the home to its former glory. Five years (and a lot of work) later, this historic edifice was formally dedicated as Boxwood Hall State Historic Site.
