THE PARKING AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF ELIZABETH IS REWARDED FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION

ELIZABETH, NJ—October 17, 2012—The Parking Authority of the City of Elizabeth was rewarded for taking initiatives in energy conservation through the EPAct Gives Back™.

“The Parking Authority has worked hard to incorporate energy efficient technology into their structures and operations,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. “They have continued to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable energy and the City of Elizabeth’s Go Green initiatives, all while contributing to an improved environment and cost savings for our residents.”

The Parking Authority has significantly reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions at the Elizabeth Parking Garage. The implementation of lighting technologies, has helped parking garages meet and exceed the requirements of the 2005 Energy Policy Act (EPAct), making it a certified “Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings.”

The result of these energy saving measures is significant for the Elizabeth community, as the lighting system alone will save taxpayers more than $34,215 per year in utility costs. The reduction in energy consumption decreases the Parking Authority’s carbon emissions by 337,345 lbs. (169 tons) a year, which is equivalent to removing 30 cars off of local roads or planting 837 additional trees in the community.

After an intense engineering analysis and inspection process, in order to meet all the requirements of the Energy Policy Act, administered by Walker Reid Strategies, Inc., the Parking Authority received certificates for their achievements in Energy Conservation.

These efforts support the City of Elizabeth’s commitment to creating a strong green foundation through the preservation of resources as well as incorporation of renewable energy sources and energy efficient programs.
