MAYOR BOLLWAGE KICKS OFF ANNUAL FREE TAX RETURN SERVICES TO RESIDENTS

ELIZABETH, NJ—February 10, 2014 – Mayor J. Christian Bollwage launched the City of Elizabeth’s annual free tax return preparation services for qualifying residents, on February 6, 2014. After recruiting volunteers from the community to train with the Internal Revenue Service, appointments are now underway to assist residents in completing their basic tax returns at no cost.

“This program has been offered for the past twelve years and it continues to provide free financial assistance to the hardworking people throughout the City of Elizabeth,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage.  “I would like to thank our skilled volunteers, who are generously giving back to the community to make this program a great success year after year.”

Made possible by the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), these certified IRS volunteers dedicate one night a week to assist Elizabeth low and  moderate income residents in filing the basic IRS forms 1040EZ and 1040A, including electronic filing for faster returns.

This tax service is offered by appointment at the following times and locations:

800 Anna Street

Tuesdays- 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Wednesdays-10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Thursdays- 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m.

Residents with an income of under $50,000 are qualified to take advantage of this free service. Participants with appointments are required to bring with them: a copy of their 2013 tax return; this year’s tax package, information of all deductions and credits and all relevant forms such as their W-2 and interest 1099s. They must also bring photo identification and a valid social security card for each exemption they are claiming.

“Filing tax applications through a trained professional saves participants filing fees, which is increasingly important during this difficult economic climate,” said Councilman Carlos Torres. “I encourage all eligible residents to take advantage of this great service.”

The free program will run through April 12, 2014. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact Elizabeth Montes in the City of Elizabeth’s Public Information Office at 908-820-4026.
