MAYOR BOLLWAGE HOSTS WALK-A-THON FOR PROSTATE CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

ELIZABETH, NJ— September 16, 2013 - On Saturday, September 21, 2013, Mayor J. Christian Bollwage will host the City of Elizabeth’s First Annual Walk-a-thon in honor of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The event will take place at Kellogg Park, located at the intersection of North Avenue and Madison Avenue from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

“Prostate cancer is one of the most common diseases in America and is the second leading cause of death in men,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. “This Walk-a-thon is not only a great way to promote a healthier lifestyle, it will also help raise awareness about this disease and encourage our residents to get tested.”

September has officially been designated as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Elizabeth. In 2012 alone, there were an estimated 242,000 men diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. This disease, which usually appears after the age of 50, is treatable and the benefit of an earlier discovery can help save someone’s life.

Krishna H. Garlic, Director of the Department of Health and Human Services, is spearheading this initiative in order to inform the community and emphasize the benefits of preventative efforts.

“The Health Department and our partners determined that it was important to acknowledge Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, as this disease silently impacts many of our residents,” said Director Garlic. “Unfortunately, far too many men neglect getting tested because of fear. Today we are asking them to set aside their fears, step forward and be tested at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, or by their own physician.”

All participants, whether they are members of a team or walking as an individual, will receive literature on pre-cancer screenings and treatment options. At this free event, a variety of healthy snacks will be offered.

In addition to the City of Elizabeth’s Department of Health & Human Services, this Walk-a-thon is also receiving support and sponsorship from Council President William Gallman, Jr.; Bayway Family Success Center and Trinitas Regional Medical Center.

For a pre-registration packet, please contact the Department of Health and Human Services at 908-820-4050. If you are interested in receiving more information or to schedule your pre-cancer screening, please call Trinitas Regional Medical Center at 908-994-8244.
