MAYOR BOLLWAGE HOLDS PRESS CONFERENCE TO LAUNCH ASSISTANCE WITH OBAMACARE APPLICATIONS

ELIZABETH, NJ – October 7, 2013— Earlier today at 10:00 a.m., Mayor J. Christian Bollwage held a press conference to announce the City’s efforts to assist residents in the ObamaCare application process from now until March 31, 2014 deadline.

"October 1st marked the beginning of a new era in health care coverage. The goals of this new law are to give more Americans access to affordable, quality health insurance,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. “Our team will be able to provide constituents with information on benefits, rights and protections as well as what each plan includes.”

The press conference, which attracted approximately one hundred and fifty (150) attendees, was held at Union County College in the Elizabeth I. Kellogg Building. Assemblyman Joseph Cryan, Mary Faith Chmiel, Director of the Elizabeth Public Library and Krishna H. Garlic, Director of the City’s Department of Health and Human Services, also said a few words.

The official name for "ObamaCare" is the Affordable Care Act (or ACA for short), a bill signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. The overall goal is to reform the health care industry by giving more Americans access to health insurance and reducing the growth in health care spending in the United States.

The City of Elizabeth will have available personnel to help residents explore their options to determine what they will pay and receive before they make a choice. Municipal staff members, along with counselors currently being certified, will be available by appointment on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

“The status of everyone’s health care insurance is not going to be the same and many are still trying to decipher exactly what it means to them,” said Krishna H. Garlic, Health Director. “By launching this assistance program, constituents who are interested in signing up, but not sure how, can reach out to our staff members to guide them through the process. Furthermore, residents can sign on to see for themselves and view the different choices available to them.”

In addition, Mary Faith Chmiel, the new Director of the Elizabeth Public Library, has graciously offered the use of the library computers, to any resident who wishes to sign themselves up for ObamaCare using www.HealthCare.gov.

Coverage purchased through the marketplace starts as soon as January 1, 2014. Any Elizabeth resident who would like more information or would like to be placed on a list for future appointments should contact 908-820-4045. For more information on ObamaCare, please visit HealthCare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596 to sign up on your own.
