MAYOR BOLLWAGE CELEBRATES PLAY BALL IN HONOR OF NATIONAL BASEBALL MONTH

ELIZABETH, NJ – AUGUST 21, 2017 – Mayor J. Christian Bollwage, along with Councilwoman-At-Large Patricia Perkins-Auguste, Council President Carlos Torres and Councilman Kevin Kiniery, hosted the third annual Play Ball event in honor of Baseball Month in the City of Elizabeth.

As part of the U.S. Conference of Mayors support of Major League Baseball’s Play Ball initiative, this event
focused on the enjoyment and athleticism associated with the game of baseball.  Furthermore, it encouraged widespread participation in baseball-related activities. The City of Elizabeth was also featured in a segment called “Play Ball Cities of the Week,” on the MLB network.

“In addition to being a fun community event, Play Ball reinforces the value of teamwork and sportsmanship, while providing participants with the opportunity to hone and showcase skills,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. “It is always great to see so many individuals participate each year and I would like to thank the U.S. Conference of Mayors for supporting this effort.”

Over 200 children participated in Play Ball, which began 3:00 p.m at Hanratty Field on August 17, 2017. Mayors were encouraged to implement the initiative throughout their cities, with the goal of strengthening the connection between communities and the National Pastime. Activities such as playing catch, running bases and the fundamentals of baseball were taught.

Following the recreational hour, two friendly baseball games were held by the girls and boys ten-year old divisions of the Elmora Youth League. Teams were competing for the Mayor’s Trophy, which crowns the local champion league for the season. Families and friends also received free t-shirts and hats.

“This exciting event draws more residents each year and continues to be a success,” said Councilwoman-At-Large Patricia Perkins-Auguste. “Thank you to all the City departments, who make Play Ball possible as well as to the MLB network for coming out and highlighting our great City.”
