ELIZABETH, NJ—October 2, 2014— Mayor J. Christian Bollwage and The Board of Trustees of the Elizabeth Public Library are happy to announce that the Elmora Branch of the Library will be opened for 4 hours on Sunday afternoons from October 5, 2014 through December 28, 2014.
“As the fourth largest municipality in New Jersey with a population of nearly 125,000, the need for additional assistance has also increased, so it is vital that educational, informational and recreational opportunities are expanded to accommodate schedules,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. “From the new Sunday hours at the Elmora Branch to  the renovation and restoration initiatives at the Main building, the City of Elizabeth continues to be a strong supporter of library services and projects."
The Sunday hours, which will be from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., come as a result of a community survey that overwhelmingly supported additional service hours.  The Elmora Branch was chosen for this pilot project because of these responses and requests; heavy readership and steady foot traffic at the location as well as the ease with which it can be opened with limited staff.
“By opening the Elmora Branch on Sunday we can expand service hours, increase programs and introduce more initiatives within the community," explained Library Director Mary Faith Chmiel.
The Elmora Branch will be open on October 5, 12, 19 and 26; November 2, 9, 16 and 23; December 7, 14, 21 and 28.  There will be no Sunday hours on Thanksgiving weekend.  “Should this project be as successful as we anticipate,” said Chmiel, “we have every hope of continuing these hours in 2015.”
In addition, the Elizabeth Public Library remains committed to meeting the requirements of the community by enhancing programs, upgrading technology and improving the ability to link users from anywhere, via the new, free ElizPL app.
“Providing exciting educational tools, access to resources as well as rewarding activities, the Elizabeth Public Library is a place to learn, connect and broaden horizons,” said Councilman-At-Large Manny Grova, Jr. “These new Sunday hours will be beneficial to our residents and their need to express their creativity, hone skills and develop new interests.”
The Main Library is one of the many remarkable structures throughout Elizabeth and is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. Through preservation and conservation efforts, the City of Elizabeth continues to restore landmarks within its historic districts, beautify neighborhoods and enhance the quality of life throughout the community.
