CITY OF ELIZABETH TO RE-NAME WATERFRONT FIELD IN HONOR OF COACH TODD BOWLES OF THE NEW YORK JETS

ELIZABETH, NJ—April 21, 2016 – On Saturday, April 23rd, Mayor J. Christian Bollwage will be joined by Senator Raymond Lesniak, Freeholder Sergio Granados, Councilwoman-At-Large Patricia Perkins-Auguste, Councilman of the First Ward Carlos Torres as well as many other dignitaries at a ceremony to re-name Elizabeth Waterfront Field after Elizabeth’s own Todd Bowles, Head Coach of the New York Jets.

“One of the biggest attributes of a role model is the ability to inspire others and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this dedication,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. “Coach Bowles is a hardworking and talented man, who not only played the sport, but also has an extensive résumé of coaching. He will always be a part of our community and it is with great honor that the City of Elizabeth renames this field after him.”

Born and raised in Elizabeth, Bowles graduated from Elizabeth High School in 1981. During his high school career, he displayed impressive athleticism, teamwork as well as a commitment to excellence on the football and baseball teams. His career has been significant and includes playing actively in the NFL from 1986 to 1993. According to his biography, he went on to various coaching positions with six different NFL teams after retiring as a player. On January 14, 2015, Chairman and CEO Woody Johnson named Todd Bowles the new Head Coach of the New York Jets.

“Not only is Coach Bowles a true visionary, who will always be synonymous with Elizabeth High School, he is proof that if you work hard and believe in your dreams, they will come true,” said Carlos Torres, Councilman of the First Ward. “An accomplished and committed leader, Coach has contributed so much to the sport and the community as well as football fans everywhere are grateful.”

The Elizabeth Waterfront Field, located at 173-179 Front Street, will be officially dedicated to Todd Bowles during a ceremony, which will begin at 1:00 p.m. Free and open to the public, the event will feature food, games, Jets Fest rides and a series of appearances, which will include, but not be limited to: the Elizabeth High School Marching Band, Minutemen Football Team and Cheerleaders, Color Guard and New York Jets Flight Crew.

This particular field is part of the Mayor’s ongoing efforts to enhance and increase recreational opportunities within the City of Elizabeth. With the incorporation of synthetic turf, these fields represent the conditions found on professional fields. They provide the youth of Elizabeth with the proper training environment to hone skills and develop abilities in order to achieve a promising future. It officially opened in 2012 and is home to over ten recreational teams.

Mr. Bowles will be joined by his wife, Taneka Bowles, and family at this momentous occasion. For more information on this event, please contact 908-820-4238.
