ELIZABETH, NJ—May 30, 2013 — Earlier today, Mayor J. Christian Bollwage joined Senator Raymond Lesniak and Assemblywoman Annette Quijano at “The Golden Years of Love” event, which celebrated over thirty (30) couples from Elizabeth who have been married for more than fifty (50) years.

“These individuals deserve to be recognized; not only are they a testament of unconditional love but they are also setting a great example for the community,” said Mayor J. Christian Bollwage. “Their commitment to each other is undeniable and I wish them much happiness, today and always.”

In addition to the celebration, Mayor Bollwage renewed the couples’ vows in one large ceremony and Deacon Joe Caporaso, Principal of Our Lady of Guadalupe, was there to perform Catholic rituals. Furthermore, Senator Lesniak presented each participant with a Proclamation from the State Legislature and hired a photographer to come in and document each moment of the celebration. The longest married couple has been together for seventy-two years.

“From economic ups and downs to new technologies and political history, these couples have witnessed constant changes in the world around them; yet one thing remains the same and that is their love for one another,” said Senator Raymond Lesniak. “All of these couples have the same universal values: adoration, understanding, care, acceptance and the ability to move forward…together.”

Each couple was presented with flowers when they walked in: a boutonnière for the groom and a corsage for the bride.  Music was provided by Dino, the One Man Band, as well as the Elizabeth Senior Choir singing a number of songs reflecting the anniversary theme. After the presentations and ceremonies, the couples joined together and danced to the classic “At Last” by Etta James.  They then enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by Brito’s Barbeque, a new restaurant, located at 670 Clarkson Avenue in Elizabeth.

The celebration was held at the Peterstown Community Center, where approximately 300 people gathered to honor the devoted couples. Also in attendance were Councilman of the Fifth Ward William Gallman, Councilman-At-Large Manny Grova and Councilman-At-Large Frank Cuesta donated the cupcake tower.
