2008 Inductees

William F. Halsey, Jr.

George Anderson Howard

George Howard was born in Elizabeth, NJ, on February 5, 1933. He was educated in the Elizabeth School system, and graduated Thomas Jefferson High School in 1951.

George had over 40 years of boxing coaching and training experience. He was an active coach with the Elizabeth Recreation Boxing Department and served as the Committee Chairman of New Jersey Association of USA Boxing, Inc.

Boxing Career Highlights

George boxed as a professional in various places including, Twin City & Laurel Gardens in Newark, Asbury Park Convention Hall, Bayonne Stadium, Hungarian Hall, Elizabeth and many more. He was undefeated as a professional.

1949- Started Amateur Boxing as a Welterweight at Carver Center Recreational Center, Elizabethport, New Jersey, and Trainer- Tony Orlando Sr.

1950- Golden and Diamond Gloves Finalist.

1951- Turned Professional at the age of 18 as a Middleweight.

1951- Chosen New Jersey Fighter of the Month, for the month of May, by Ringside Magazine.

1951-1961- Graduated Thomas Jefferson High School, Elizabeth, New Jersey. His Professional career interrupted due to the Korean War. He entered the U.S. Air Force. While in the Air Force, served as Head Coach for the Base Boxing Team; helped train and coach teams of all levels in Germany, France and the United States.

Coaching/Training

1983- Head Coach of the Police Athletic League (PAL) in Elizabeth, New Jersey, from 1983 to 1996, total of 16 years.

1989- Team Coach for Golden Gloves Nationals in Knoxville, Tennessee.

1990- Team Coach for Golden Gloves Nationals in Miami, Florida.

1991- Coach at All- Corners Boxing Camps, Lake Placid, and New York.

1991- Coach at 1991 Boxing Championships, Colorado Springs, Colorado. Trained and coached Junior Olympics Team for championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

1991- Trained and coached U.S Olympic Boxing team in Colorado Springs for US/Russian competition, held in Miami, Florida and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (3 week period of training and coaching.

1993- Coach of the Year, Elizabeth PAL

1994- 1996- Served in various coaching positions for top echelon amateur boxers, Lake Placid, New York.

1996- 2005- Level III Boxing Coach with U.S. Olympic Boxing.

2005- Inducted into New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame as Amateur Coach of the Year.

2006- Received Outstanding Achievement Award for Positive Attitude and Accomplishments from the First Class Development Center, Newark, New Jersey.

George was a life long resident of Elizabeth and is missed by friends and family.
