Father Charles Hudson
There were two social giants in Elizabeth during our lifetime. Eddie Gray (PAL) and Rev. Charles Hudson (HOSPICE). Gray is already in our Hall of Fame and now Rev. Hudson justifiably joins him.
Both squeezes in as athletes playing ball and devoting themselves to area sports while continuing their community goodwill.
Father Hudson has such an impact on school #25 in the Elizabeth school system and was named after him and a book was authored of his lifetime of service here.
Bedridden terminally ill patients in Hospice revered him; some dying peacefully in his presence.
He was nicknamed “Charles Hustle” during his basketball playing days at St. Aloysius H.S., Jersey City and for the Seton Hall University School at the college level. Elizabeth later became the benefactor of his religious career when he founded and was able to have sponsored the medical and spiritual care that now houses 5 centers, 100 employees and 300 volunteers.
Our new nominee was born March 9, 1935, in Jersey City, called “Mickey” by his Irish family clan because he looked like one. He died alone January 21, 1997 at age 61, shortly after receiving a humanitarian award from Drew University. Ironically he died alone, the way he never wanted others to die. His memories are gigantic--a true human giant. An Elizabeth community jewel.
