MAYOR BOLLWAGE TO ACCEPT AWARD AT URBAN LEAGUE ANNUAL DINNER
ELIZABETH, November 6, 2006 -- Mayor Chris Bollwage will accept an Empowerment Award and present a Proclamation at the Urban League of Union County’s 36th Annual Equal Opportunity Day Dinner, which will be held on Wednesday, November 8. The event will celebrate the Urban League’s 62 years of “Empowering Communities, Changing Lives” in Union County.
“The Urban League has been doing a wonderful job for the people of our community for many years and I am honored that they have chosen the City of Elizabeth’s Retail Skills Center initiative for this year’s Empowerment Award recipient,” said Mayor Chris Bollwage. “The Urban League has been instrumental in the City of Elizabeth’s economic renaissance and together we have been successful in creating new jobs, new business opportunities, and a better future.”
The purpose of this year’s Equal Opportunity Day Dinner is to salute efforts and activities that have impacted the mission of the Urban League. The City of Elizabeth has been selected as a recipient of the League’s Empowerment Award because of the City’s partnership in the accomplishments of the Retail Skills Center. The Urban League is recognizing that the creation and operation of the Retail Skills Center has had an immeasurable impact on our community in everything from business development to job creation.
The Dinner will be held at the Marriott Hotel at Newark Liberty International Airport and will begin with a Reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by a Dinner and Awards Ceremony at 7:00 p.m. The event will also feature a raffle and a musical performance by Janet Kline & Company.
“The Urban League is committed to empowering members of our diverse community and they work hard to meet the needs of all of our residents in Elizabeth and the eastern part of Union County,” said Councilwoman Patricia Perkins-Auguste. “I am thrilled that they honor the City and its Retail Skills Center Program this year. The Retail Skills Center has been a catalyst for providing employment opportunities in the service, retail, and hospitality industry. Partnerships like the Retail Skills Center go a long way in providing much needed and vital services to a growing community. On behalf of the entire City of Elizabeth I thank the Urban League of Union County for recognizing the accomplishments of the Retail Skills Center.”
The National Urban League was established in 1910, and is the nation’s oldest and largest community- based movement devoted to enable African Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights. Today, the National Urban League, headquartered in New York City, spearheads the non-partisan efforts of its local affiliates. There are over 100 local affiliates of the National Urban League located in 35 states and the District of Columbia providing direct services to more than 2 million people nationwide through programs, advocacy and research.
