"I consider this award to be a very special honor and a reflection of the success of our policies here in Elizabeth, NJ in dealing with an issue that is becoming a main priority for municipalities throughout the nation."
   - Mayor J. Christian Bollwage

Bringing people together

On April 16, 1998, the New Jersey Conference of Mayors (NJCM) hosted its 35th anniversary meeting in Atlantic City. That afternoon, the NJCM, in conjunction with the New Jersey Network Public Broadcast Company, conducted a live broadcast of the program "On-the-Record." The program featured America's Mayors Brownfield Panel Discussion. The distinguished group of panelists answered questions regarding the various aspects of Brownfield development and the impact on our nation's cities. "This was one of the most powerful public sector discussions on the topic," says Robert Colangelo, publisher of Brownfield News.

If you would like a video of the 30-minute broadcast contact, Don Fauerbach, 609-989-9216.

The program was hosted by Michael Aron, senior political correspondent for the New Jersey Network, it included Paul Helmke, mayor of Fort Wayne, Indiana and president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM); Willie Brown, mayor of San Francisco; Christian Bollwage, mayor of Elizabeth, NJ; Tom Cochran, executive director USCM; Robert Shinn, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Environment; and Jeanne Fox, administrator, US EPA Region II.

He didn't even see it coming

The highlight of the event was a surprise presentation of the Brownfield News Leadership Award for Public Policy to Mayor Christian Bollwage by representatives from AIG Environmental and Brownfield News. "Because of the mayors efforts and the recent NJ Brownfield legislation, the state of New Jersey will be featured in our upcoming August 1998 issue of Brownfield News," says Mansour Ghiasi, editorial advisor. Mayor Bollwage was selected to be the first recipient of the custom-made, glass crystal award because of his ability to shape state and national Brownfield policy. Furthermore, he was able to affect positive change and turn policy into action. Because of his efforts, more than 1 million square feet of environmentally impaired property were renewed and returned to productive use in the city of Elizabeth.

"It was easy to narrow down the list [of recipients]," says Don Fauerbach, executive director of the NJCM. For starters, Mayor Bollwage serves as co-chair of the USCM Brownfields Task Force. As an active member of the NJCM, board of directors, he works closely with the New Jersey Network -a public broadcasting station- educating the public on the importance of Brownfield development to inner cities.
